Women, gender and development in Africa.

Abstract

This chapter examines the relationship between gender and development in Africa and explains why gender is central to understanding development processes and outcomes. It introduces gender as a social construct that shapes roles, behaviour, expectations and relationships, and discusses three important features of gender relations: gender ideologies and myths, the gendered division of labour, and unequal power relationships. These structures influence how women and men participate in and benefit from social, economic and political development. The chapter also traces the evolution of approaches to women, gender and development, showing how development thinking has moved from focusing mainly on women as beneficiaries toward analysing the broader institutions and power relations that produce gender inequality. It concludes by considering approaches to integrating gender analysis into development policy and practice and highlights the importance of addressing unequal gender relations in efforts to achieve equitable development.
